What this tool does

This finder helps you work out which type of DNA test matches your question, whether that is confirming a family relationship, exploring ancestry, understanding health risks, carrier screening before having children, or a legally admissible test.

It points you to the right kind of test and what to look for, it does not carry out testing or give a diagnosis.

When to use it

Use it when you are thinking about a DNA test but are not sure which one you need, when you need to know whether a test has to be court approved, or when you want to understand the difference between the many tests on the market before you pay for one.

How it works

You tell it your main reason, whether you need results that stand up in court, and any health area you want to explore. It then recommends the test type or types that fit and explains what to check before you buy. Nothing you enter is saved, and you do not need to give your name or email to use it. For anything involving your health or a legal case, get advice from your GP, a genetic counsellor or a solicitor as well.
